The Story of St. Piran

Who was St Piran?
St. Piran was, according to legend, quite a character. He is one of three patron saints of Cornwall and the patron saint of tinners, It is said that he was very fond of a drink and lived for 206 years, eventually meeting his end by falling down a well!

The legend goes that, originally from Ireland, St Piran angered King Aengus who condemned him to be tied to a millstone and cast into the sea...but things did not go as expected, as when he hit the sea the bounds came loose, the seas calmed and the stone floated.

St Piran floated on the millstone all the way to the North shore of Cornwall where he was washed ashore on at Perran beach in Perranporth. He carried on teaching the Gospel to the Cornish people, living as a hermit and building himself a small church which you can still visit today. It is called St.Piran's Oratory and is said to be the oldest Christian Church in Britain.

St Piran and Tin Mining
One night St. Piran built a larger fire than normal in his cave on the seashore and as he sat there meditating, his big black hearthstone began to melt down in the heat and a stream of silver ran from it... he called to people to see it and they were amazed by this miracle St. Piran had revealed. This was said to be the start of the tin mining industry in Cornwall and the silver of the tin running against the black of the rock was the foundation of the black and white of the Cornish flag.
